Whilst I have no enthusiasm for Ford’s disparate badging of its bulging new SUV, I’ve been captivated by the original Capri ever since I first saw it back in 1969.

Almost as soon as they appeared in the showrooms, Capris were also starting to feature in competition. Rally and rallycross at first but soon on tracks across Europe too, thanks to a determined campaign by Ford in Germany. What emerged was one of the greatest eras of touring car racing, the Group 2 batlles between the Capris and a range of BMWs, writing cars, teams and drivers into history.

Here’s a collection of images of Capris in race action at various historic events over the last few years, serving as a timely reminder of why they were, and always will be so special.
