Anyone who truly knows the Ford Capri will tell you that this is not it.
The original Mk1, whether in 1.3 or 3.0 GT (with quad headlamps and vinyl roof) was just about every young boy’s / man’s dream. It didn’t matter that it was based on a Cortina, or that it was notoriously tail-happy, cramped in the back, and rusting inside and out. All we cared about was that this was the sexiest, affordable, everyday driver on the road, and we would spend every waking hour trying to convince our dads to buy one. As it happens, this wasn’t always that hard. Over 1.9 million Capris were sold worldwide in its all-too-short lifetime, whilst today, it remains one of the most sought-after of all 1970s classics.
Aware of this fervour, Ford has today introduced us to the new Capri; an all-electric SUV that is just about as exciting as the chance to spend an evening discussing hymns with Anne Widdecombe. Seriously Ford, other than headlines and profit, what were you thinking?! Capris were sleek, swaged, and spectacular: This is, at best, garish and gross. It’s bad enough that modern driving experiences are reduced to setting the cruise control to 20mph, without the likes of Ford (and for some strange reason Eric Cantona) suggesting that we can recreate those once magical days in a bloated banana.
EVs don’t have to be ugly. Both Polestar and Porsche (even Skoda) have shown that fine lines can still be adopted despite the absence of a combustion engine, but whereas I would have once queued for hours to simply acquire a brochure, this is one Capri that I will be happy to never see again.
