BMW’s new F10 5-Series has been out for just over a year, and whilst its a worthy and very capable executive saloon, the model we’ve all been waiting for is the M5 – traditionally the fastest car in BMW’s line-up.
Well, wait no more. Actually, given how long BMW strung out the reveal of the 1 Series M Coupe, we could still be here until next Christmas waiting to find out more, but thankfully since we understand the M5 is due to begin shipping this summer, there should be little reason for BMW prolonging it’s launch. Famous last words…
BMW have published the first teaser video for the new M5 this evening over on m-power.com – it’s only 22 seconds long and doesn’t tell us much, but additional information will be provided this Friday, 4th of March, 2011.
The video shows us the M5 accelerating in a tunnel but sounding worryingly quiet – given the sound that its predecessor would have made in such an enclosed space, but let’s not get carried away yet, maybe BMW are intentionally misleading us in order to make the surprise even more welcome.
The F10 M5 will be powered by a twin-turbocharged V8, replacing the outgoing car’s naturally aspirated V10, and whilst the forced-induction V8 is expected to produce at least 550bhp with more than 501lb ft of torque (117lb ft more than its predecessor), it is based on the same powerplant currently fitted to both the X5 M and X6 M.
BMW have received criticism over the un-typical refinement of this engine in these SUV M models, but we’ve been reliably informed that the M5 uses a very different engine map and consequently revs higher and harder to deliver a more typical M5 experience.
Let’s hope so, but we’ll see you back here on Friday to find out if our concerns are justified..
