First glimpse of the Opel/Vauxhall Monza Concept

Vauxhall, together with sister company Opel, will reveal its new Monza Concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September, designed to take the fight to BMW’s 4 Series and Audi’s A5.

The concept will showcase the car maker’s new design philosophy and demonstrate its latest connectivity and powertrain solutions. It also marks the next step in Opel/Vauxhall’s challenge to the established German premium car makers following on from the new Cascada four-seat convertible.

As yet, Opel/Vauxhall are yet to confirm if the Monza will ever reach production, describing it as a ‘..study that will have a long-term impact on the next generation of Vauxhall and Opel models,’ but given its recent concepts and the fact that its been 16 years since the departure of the medium-sized Calibra coupé, a 2014 production launch seems likely.

The ‘Monza’ name harks back to the model produced between 1978 and 1986, which in the UK was called the Vauxhall Royale – that was a three-door four-seat coupé, which in Monza GSE guise was powered by a 3.0-litre six cylinder engine with a limited slip differential.

Opel/Vauxhall’s CEO, Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann said “I can’t yet go into detail about how the Monza Concept’s interior design.. However, I can guarantee that viewed from any angle, its innovative body design and perfect proportions will turn heads. But they are just a visible expression of the great substance you will find under the bodywork.”

The new Monza Concept represent a styling evolution of Vauxhall’s current theme and conveys a sense of ‘lithe athleticism, rather than pure muscle power’.

Its overall look is characterised by the bonnet crease which now appears more three-dimensional and prominent, while the chrome grille bar carrying the brand logo now sweeps up with winglets at its tips. Two characteristic blades under the headlamps add further emphasis to this more athletic look.
