Drifting in a BMW M5 is really easy, or at least that’s the message BMW would like to convey as we watch Performance Centre Instructor Johan Schwartz stay sideways for a little over 51 miles.
Schwartz flew past the previous record of 47.71 miles, set in Abu Dhabi last February and covered a total of 322.5 laps around the 255-metre (circumference) BMW Performance Centre skid pad, raising $20,000 for charity in the process.
The M5 was a standard M-DCT transmission-equipped model (customers in the U.S. can also choose a manual M5) fitted with a fresh set of Continental ContiSport ultra-high performance tyres, 255/30 x 20 at the front and 295/30 x 20 at the rear.
Schwartz climbs out of the car all smiles, but we can’t help wondering if he’d made a quick trip to the Gents before the photo-opp, after all 322 laps multiplied by around 12-seconds per lap equals at least 64 minutes of sideways action..
