In the run up to next week’s Auto Shanghai 2013, BMW have released more images of its new Sports Activity Coupé based on the current model X3.

The Concept X4 is a wider, lower and more sporty than the X3, designed for those people who value driving pleasure over outright utility, but still prefer the lofty ride height of an SUV.

Spanning 4,648 mm in length, 1,915 mm in width and 1,622 mm in height the Concept X4 sits on the same wheelbase as the X3 but is 34mm wider and 53mm lower.

Performance will likely be on a par with its more versatile sibling, with engines starting from the 181bhp xDrive20d up to the 309bhp xDrive35d. Given BMW’s goal of further distinguishing its coupé models, there will likely also be an M Performance version along the lines of the X5/X6 M50d.

The Concept X4 which makes its world debut in Shanghai is close to the final production version, which will go on sale in early 2014.
