Watch Michael Vergers as he breaks the Nürburgring Nordschleife production car lap record in a Radical SR8 (with commentary from Michael). Brave? Certainly. But was it really in the spirit of the term “production car”?

Impressive – yes. Committed – yes. Commitable – probably!
Is it in the spirit of ‘production car’ – no I don’t think so. It is road legal and therefore qualifies by the skin of it’s teeth but my caveat to the ‘production’ criteria is that it should be able to be driven comfortably, in any weather, from the UK to the circuit.
What it does show is a) what an incredible lap Bellof’s 6’11” 26 years ago was and b) how impressively ‘close’ a road car car now get.
Radical now have an SR8 that has 420bhp so it should be even faster. Whether they will bother until their record is beaten is another matter, but it must be nice to have something in reserve!
