Volkswagen introduces another lifestyle SUV, aptly named the T-ROC

The Tiguan and Touareg will soon be joined in the Volkswagen range by several new models — firstly the compact Taigun, revealed earlier this year in New Delhi, India and then the CrossBlue and CrossBlue Coupé concepts; which are also now in development.

The all-new T-ROC, looks like a cross between the 2012 Cross Coupé concept and the Volkswagen Scirocco, and is positioned below the Tiguan. It’s powered by a 181bhp/380Nm direct-injection turbodiesel engine, mated to a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox applying its power to the ground via the latest version of VW’s 4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive with a Haldex-5 coupling.

The ‘T’ in T-ROC refers to the SUV nomenclature within Volkswagen for the Taigun, Tiguan and Touareg, while ‘ROC’ is a nod towards the rocky off-road trails it’s able to traverse.

The T-ROC can be driven in three different operating modes; ‘street’, ‘offroad’ and ‘snow’, each of which modifies the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system, engine, DSG gearbox, ABS and hill start and hill descent assist systems.

The design of the front end is said to demonstrate Volkswagen’s new approach to compact SUVs, while the T-ROC’s coupé-like profile morphs into a convertible by removing the carbon composite roof, which splits into two halves which can then be stowed neatly in the boot.

Its compact design is based on VW’s modular transverse matrix (MQB) platform, measuring in at 4,179 mm long, 1,831 mm wide and 1,501 mm high, while at 1,420 kg it’s light enough to average 57.6 mpg and emit just 129 g/km of CO2.

Performance is similar to that of the Golf GTD, with zero to 62 mph covered in 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph, while its relatively short overhangs – 811 mm (front), 772 mm (rear) – and wide track make for an agile and sporty drive. Tyres are 245/45 in size fitted on 19-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, there’s a digital instrument display and a 12.3 inch colour portable tablet which serves as the infotainment display. The haptic multi-touch display can be configured by the user, and adapts the colours and information displayed according to the operating mode selected.

The T-ROC makes its world premiere at Volkswagen’s Geneva Motor Show stand next week.
