At the close of the two hour race at Brands Hatch, Manuel Cintrano and Javier Morcillo recorded their fourth win of the Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship (BEC) series in their Mosler MT900R, though only after contact in the closing laps with Andy Schulz’s Ferrari 430.
After a near faultless opening stint by Paul Bailey, Schulz took control of the No.3 Ferrari after half an hour, driving back towards the top of the leader board, eventually re-taking the lead after the restart following the first of two safety car periods in the race.
He passed Martin Byford in the Bullrun Lotus Evora and Tom Webb’s BMW M3 GTR – both men running longer opening stints.
Morcillo followed him past both Byford and Webb, battling over the lead in Class Three and into second place overall – some 20 seconds behind Schulz, during which time he closed slightly on the leading Ferrari.
Morcillo’s task was simplified by a second safety car, brought out by a combination of a stranded Lotus Elise at Surtees and a BMW M3 at Sheene Curve, after a wheel sheered on the Intersport entered No.77 car.
For much of the final half hour Morcillo followed Schulz less than two seconds adrift, the Spaniard gaining through the corners of the Indy circuit, with Schulz pulling away though the fast corners of the Grand Prix loop.
Morcillo’s advantage through the hairpin of Druids gave him the opportunity to drive into a gap, only for Schulz to attempt to close the door on the Mosler, resulting in him spinning across the track as Morcillo went on to victory.
Schulz finished a disappointing second, with Joe Osborne crossing the line in third overall to win Class Four in the Optimum Motorsport Ginetta G50 started by Ryan Ratcliffe.
The No.25 Ferrari 458 of Simon Phillips and Pete Storey were fourth overall to score another win in Class Two, while Tom Webb, sharing the car with brother James, won Class Three in the No.69 BMW M3 after beating the Bullrun team out of the pits when both pitted under the second safety car.
Morcillo and Cintrano set a fastest lap of 1 min 27.610 in their Class One Mosler and currently lie 2nd overall in the championship just 1 point behind the Class Three Lotus Evora of Byford, Green and Adams.
Next race in the series will be at the refurbished Snetterton circuit during the weekend of 18th and 19th August.
