It’s been a remarkable few weeks for Multimatic’s racing Mustangs.
Stateside, IMSA announced the launch of an all-new race series for 2024, solely for the stunning Dark Horse R cars currently being built; whilst in Barcelona, the Dinamic GT squad rolled out the eagerly awaited GT3 car for its maiden European test. But perhaps the most deserving headlines of all were here in the UK where Academy Motorsport’s Erik Evans and Matt Cowley first took an emphatic GT4 win at Brands Hatch to pitch themselves into the title race, before arriving at Donington Park last weekend and absolutely crushing all opposition to finish a lap in front of the second placed car and ten places ahead of their McLaren rivals to secure the overall championship by 21 points.
With a new GT4 model having been unveiled earlier in the year at Spa-Francorchamps, this may well have been the last time we see this outstanding car in top flight competition and so we’re dedicating this Top 20 to the car that has thrilled fans since its winning British GT debut in 2019; and to driver Matt Cowley who has steadfastly led the Academy squad’s charge with the Ford V8 since leaving Aston Martin’s junior driver programme at the end of the same year.
Like so many others, we’ve loved every sight and sound of the Mustang: From the moment it bolts out of the garage, and through every twist and turn as it charges on. Yet there’s a ‘but’ to this story: Though Ford Performance and Multimatic have given the strongest hints that they’ll soon be announcing a leading line-up of factory-supported drivers for its GT3 campaign, there’s no sign that Cowley will be amongst them; nor that they’ll be doing likewise in GT4 – which makes us wonder if this is where this story ends? For now anyway.
So here’s to a fantastic car, and to a worthy champion … and here’s to hoping that maybe one day soon, we’ll see them reunited.
