BMW has announced a mid-life (LCI) facelift of the F10 5 Series, at the same time as it releases a Competition Package version of its four M5-based models – M5 Saloon, M6 Coupe, M6 Convertible and M6 Gran Coupe.
The Competition Package boosts engine output from 552bhp to 567bhp, lowers the suspension by around 10 millimetres and adds a separate control unit for the Active M Differential.
The M-specific Servotronic power steering has been re-mapped to increase agility, while the M Dynamic mode of BMW’s dynamic stability control system (DSC) is more acutely geared to favour the car’s dynamic handling.
To set the Competition Package models apart, they’re fitted with new 20-inch M light-alloy wheels, and the customary M twin tailpipes are now fed by a sports exhaust system, recognisable by their black chrome finish.
Access to the improved engine, chassis and sound experience is achieved by selecting the Comfort, Sport or Sport+ modes via the M Drive buttons on the steering wheel.
On paper the changes are subtle, shaving 0.1 seconds off each car’s 0 to 62mph time, or 0.2 seconds off the sprint from 0 to 125mph, so it looks like you’ll have to visit the track to appreciate the full benefits.
