Long-time Ferrari enthusiast, Eric Clapton, talks exclusively in the latest issue of The Official Ferrari Magazine about his latest car produced as part of Ferrari’s One Off programme.
Designed by the Centro Stile Ferrari in collaboration with Pininfarina and the engineers from Maranello, the SP12 EC was created as homage to Clapton’s career and his long lasting experience as a Ferrari owner.
Over the years, the guitarist’s favourite model has been the Ferrari 512 BB, of which he’s owned no less than three examples.
What he wanted therefore was to be able to drive a car inspired by that very model but which also took the multi-award-winning 458 Italia as a reference point. The result is the SP12 EC.
First seen at London’s HR Owen Ferrari dealership, the SP12 EC’s proportions and architecture have been reworked down to the tiniest detail both in terms of their styling and technology.
The famous musician said that embarking on the project was like “being in front of a gigantic blank canvas that had to be painted on” and that being involved with the birth and development of the car was “an incredible experience, one of the most satisfying things I’ve ever done”.
Ferrari work on up to 2 or 3 One Off projects each year, with most owners choosing anonymity rather than letting the rest of the world see their bespoke creation.
Jason Harris, Communications Manager for Ferrari North Europe, spoke about Clapton’s decision to showcase his SP12 EC in The Official Ferrari Magazine as “Like an art collector commissioning a piece of art, then deciding which gallery gets to show it.”
