IOTD: Land Rover DC100 owns the wilderness.. (w/DOWNLOAD)

Today’s Image Of The Day is a personal one for me – I’m well aware that for many Land Rover enthusiasts, September 2011 represents the month when the spirit of their beloved Defender was put to the sword – the DC100 Concept was unveiled with the promise that by 2015 something very close to it would become the new Land Rover Defender.

Let me bypass the debate about the DC100’s design (which I love by the way) and whether all that plastic trim and shapely panel-work is in the least bit practical for Derbyshire farmers. Let’s also skip the discussion about those huge tonka-toy wheels, since we all know it will come fitted with something far more practical.

There’s plenty of folk who use a Land Rover within their everyday businesses and I can empathise with the current Defender’s tool-like qualities, but for me a Land Rover is all about discovering new things off the beaten track, finding roads where other drivers wouldn’t think to look. It’s about freedom from our clogged-up roads and liberation from the crowd.

That’s why the image above captures, what would be my best day ever – unmade roads as far as the eye can see, a brand new Land Rover and a full tank of fuel. Set aside all the protestations, if Land Rover can make this scenario a reality with the new DC100, I’ll be as happy as a pig in sh** (well, you know the rest) and I suspect many other people will be too.
