I’d hazard a guess that this is the F-TYPE we’ve all been waiting for. Ever since the C-X16 first appeared in 2011, reigniting thoughts of a successor to the E-Type and a direct competitor to Porsche’s venerable 911.
Yet strangely, Jaguar chose to produce the heavier, less spacious Convertible version first – a move which Jaguar defend by citing all the plaudits the F-TYPE has already won including the 2013 ‘World Car Design of the Year’ award.
The engine range will mirror that of the Convertible and include the 335bhp V6-powered F-TYPE, 375bhp S and 488bhp V8 S. The coupé’s weight is expected to drop, while luggage space should now become acceptable for most people.
The language of Jaguar’s press release is telling though – “The F-TYPE Coupé is the most dynamically capable, performance-focused, production Jaguar ever..”
Jaguar’s Director of Design, Ian Callum, goes on to say “The excitement generated when we revealed the C-X16 concept was terrific; so to now be on the cusp of what I can assure you will be a drama-filled reveal event in Los Angeles for F-TYPE Coupé is a very significant moment.”
“We’ve been overwhelmed by the positive reaction to F-TYPE Convertible, but for me the purity of creating a sports Coupé is a uniquely satisfying process – and I know that both visually and dynamically, F-TYPE Coupé raises the bar yet again.”
The F-TYPE Coupé will go on sale from spring 2014, with further variants including a 500+ bhp R version following soon after.
The Jaguar C-X16 made its debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show powered by a 468bhp Hybrid powerplant based on the supercharged V6 engine now used in the F-TYPE S.
