The 271bhp Ghibli Diesel costs around £4,000 more than Audi’s 309bhp A6 3.0 TDI quattro SE and £8,000 above Mercedes’ 248bhp E 350 BlueTEC AMG Sport or BMW’s 254bhp 530d SE.

Closest competitor to the 404bhp Ghibli S is BMW’s 443bhp 550i M Sport Saloon, which is priced around £6,000 less.

The Ghibli is Maserati’s first saloon in the premium E segment and the first Maserati in history to feature a diesel engine. The all-new engine was designed by former Scuderia Ferrari F1 Head of Engines Paolo Martinelli.
