I’m sure I’m not alone in finding Mazda’s tech-speak a little challenging to decipher. We’ve become so used to such all-encompassing phrases such as Efficient Dynamics, Intelligent Performance and ECOnetic that initially Mazda’s SKYACTIV has me wondering if the Japanese car maker has invented some form of anti-gravitational device. And how does SKYACTIV fit with ZOOM-ZOOM? Or is that SO last decade?
All will be revealed at the Frankfurt motorshow next month (although if you’d like to better understand SKYACTIV now, then watch the video below) when Mazda launches the all-new CX-5 – the first of a new generation of Mazda products that will adopt the full range of Mazda’s SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY and new design theme, ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’.
The Mazda CX-5 will be progressively introduced to global markets from early 2012 and will be fitted with all-new Mazda gasoline and diesel engines, a choice of manual and automatic transmissions and the new light-weight SKYACTIVE body and chassis design.
The engine lineup for the European specification CX-5 will include Mazda’s SKYACTIV-G 2.0 gasoline engine and SKYACTIV-D 2.2 diesel engine available in Standard Power and High Power versions. Mazda focused on achieving exceptional environmental performance for its new compact SUV and targeted CO2 emissions of less than 120g/km for the SKYACTIV-D 2.2 engine model.
The CX-5 is also the first production model to showcase Mazda’s new design theme, ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’, which was previewed with the Mazda SHINARI and Mazda MINAGI concept cars. Unique themes of KODO design include a prominent new front view with a bolder family face and dynamic styling that is said to convey a strong sense of vitality and agility.
The CX-5 will be joined on Mazda’s stand at the Frankfurt show by the face-lifted Mazda3.
