I’ve been racing this circuit on Race Driver:GRID and it’s frickin’ impossible. Mucho, mucho respect to Andy and all those drivers who can drive quickly around the real La Sarthe – even the virtual one has me struggling to finish anything other than dead last.

How much cooler is this car than the current LMPs, especially the whispering diesels? Yes, the new breed of Audi and Peugeot are incredibly quick – and I hope the revised rules mean the new Gulf Astons can truly challenge them for an outright win – but I’m not sure the prototypes are as exciting to watch as the McLaren F1, which always looked pretty tricky to really get the maximum from. Nor do they seem as charismatic as the old Group C cars. Either that or I’m just getting old. Answers on a postcard…

The recent spate of quiet prototypes running on the devil’s fuel has rather lessened the spectacle, for me at least. Even when the driver is running at 10/10ths the cars seem utterly, utterly planted, something that the old cars never appeared to be (just ask Mark Webber!).

Richard you are spot on, I have next to interest in Le Mans but watching these ‘old’ videos is entertaining! I’d love to see a return to them racing cars like the McLaren F1 and Ferrari F40….hmmm McLaren vs. Ferrari….that could be interesting!
Here’s another video along the same lines that is fantastic. The music is a little cheesy but the shots of the drivers foot work just does it for me. I’m not sure why but when he brakes I’m looking at the vid thinking ‘damn that looks good!’
