With rounds 3 and 4 of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship taking place during May, sports car fans are guaranteed plenty of action-packed racing as the teams congregate at “The Rock” this weekend.

Sixty of the UK’s finest sports car drivers will compete at Rockingham Speedway in Corby, Northamptonshire during the Bank Holiday weekend (Sun 5th & Mon 6th) and do battle at the second venue of the season.

Last month, the championship kicked off at Oulton Park, with 2010 Champion David Ashburn and Porsche factory driver Nick Tandy taking a win apiece and finishing up on top of the standings by 18 points. They lead their Trackspeed team mates Jon Minshaw and Phil Keen, also driving a Porsche 997GT3 R.

A two-hour endurance race is scheduled for race three of the ten race series, where over 60 of the UK’s finest sports car drivers will compete with marques such as Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Ferrari, Ginetta, McLaren, Mercedes, and Porsche. It’s the endurance race of the season, after the two 60-minute sprint openers at Oulton Park, and should allow some of the more experienced racers to shine through among the competitive grid.

Behind the current championship leaders, Marco Attard and Oliver Bryant in their stunning Ecurie Ecosse BMW Z4 GT3 are looking to shake up the Trackspeed order, and steal a win at Rockingham.

Other GT3 contenders, looking to get their seasons under way include newcomers Von Ryan Racing, who start their British GT campaign at Rockingham with drivers Greg Demoustier and Duncan Tappy. They’ll contest all the remaining rounds bar Zandvoort, due to a calendar clash for its drivers.

Fortec Motorsports will also be in attendance with their two-car British GT team, but have shuffled their drivers around so that the #14 Mercedes SLS AMG will feature Jason Minshaw and Benji Hetherington, and the #15 car will introduce Fortec single-seater pro Oli Webb, with Danny Candia alongside.
