Nissan reveals its Super GT warrior - the GT-R Nismo GT500 (w/VIDEO)

Following this morning’s announcements by Honda and Lexus, Nissan have revealed their Japanese Super GT contender in the new GT500 class.

The GT-R Nismo GT500 was presented by NISMO President Shoichi Miyatani at a press conference at Suzuka Circuit this afternoon, together with the the Honda NSX Concept-GT and Lexus LF-CC.

All three cars have been developed under the new GT500 regulations, which from 2014 will be developed based on the same new technical regulations (except for engines) as the DTM (German Touring Car Championship).

From 2017, DTM manufacturers, Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, will be able to race against Toyota, Nissan and Honda in the Japanese Super GT series (and vice versa), although in the near term unification will mainly benefit the development of each series and make for more cost-efficient racing.

Unification focuses mainly on the chassis and aerodynamics, evolving towards fully commonality by 2017 – until then each series will retain their distinct engine formats, with DTM using a 4.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 and Super GT a 2.0-litre turbocharged four cylinder engine with optional hybrid system.

A North American DTM-style series is also on the cards from 2017, bringing Grand Am into the same technical partnership with DTM and Super GT.
