It’s been nearly 20 years since I last sat on the grid of a Porsche Club race, so it was good to make my return, albeit as a hospitality guest of title sponsor Fuel Protect at last weekend’s Silverstone round.
The connection may at first seem tenuous – for a series contested by purely petrol-engined cars – but the company has chosen to sponsor the 14-race series as a means of promoting its new Fuel Protect product, which insures against the risk of misfuelling incidents.
Every four minutes, someone puts the wrong fuel in their car. Of course that’s never you, nor I, but we probably know someone who’s done it – and the cost and inconvenience of such a slip in concentration could run into the thousands.
According to the AA, this affects around 150,000 people in the UK each year, and for less than £20 a year Fuel Protect (via recovery specialist Auto Fuel Fix) will attend the scene, drain the contaminated fuel and ensure the vehicle can be restarted to continue its journey with the minimum of fuss.
The policy covers up to two misfuelling incidents a year (with a £50 excess), and recovery to a garage of your choice within a 30 mile radius if required.
“Even if you don’t believe you would ever misfuel your own car, you probably know someone who would,” said Auto Fuel Fix Managing Director Bruce Compton. “It appeals to a broad range of people, from households and fleets who own a mixture of petrol and diesel cars, to drivers who have recently switched and wish to protect against a costly mistake.”
The team’s race engineers were hard at work between race 1 and 2 repairing the power-steering failure on the #36 car.
One thing it couldn’t protect against was the power-steering failure which blighted race 1 for the #36 car; the Class 2 Porsche Boxster S looked resplendent in its green and white livery, but driver Jonathan Evans experienced more of a workout than he’d planned during Saturday’s double-header event.
