Last year Toyota Motorsport GmbH set a new electric-powered lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife with the road-legal TMG EV P001 car, and the TS030 Hybrid will set out next week to conquer the Le Mans 24 Hours. But TMG’s ambitions are not limited to the race track.
TMG’s advanced electric and electronic department has spent the past months developing on an updated electric powertrain, which is more powerful and more durable – capable of withstanding the rigours of a well-known hill climb in Pikes Peak, Colorado, with its mix of tarmac and dusty off-road sections.
Based on a Radical chassis, the TMG EV P002, will compete at Pikes Peak in the hands of multiple Japanese rally champion Fumio Nutahara, with prominent branding from Yokohama.
With a combined maximum power of 470bhp (350kW) from its two axial flux motors, the TMG EV P002 has a predicted top speed of 240km/h in its Pikes Peak configuration, and it will need all of that to climb the course’s 1,500m and reach its 4,300m summit. If 470bhp doesn’t sound exactly tyre-shredding, then perhaps its 900Nm (664lb-ft) of torque might make up for it. Add to that the fact that TMG’s electric powertrain maintains full power regardless of altitude.
The TMG EV P002 underwent a successful three-day testing session at the Paul Ricard circuit in southern France in May to verify car and powertrain performance, which is where the above video was recorded. If the EV P002 is anywhere near as successful as its record-breaking predecessor, then we should be in for an exciting ride.
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado begins on 8 July, 2012.
