I would love to be the contractor responsible for repairing the stone chips on Lamborghini’s new Aventador Roadster after running five of them flat-out on the south runway at Miami International Airport. Anyone who’s driven their supercar at Leicestershire’s Bruntingthorpe proving ground will know what I mean.
The runway, which normally plays host to passenger airlines taking-off at between 150 mph and 180 mph, was closed for a brief period while Lamborghini demonstrated the new Roadster’s top-down prowess. In fact the Aventadors were so quick there was no impact on flight arrivals and departures, although it must have been quite a spectacle for people sitting taxiing on one of the planes.
Today’s event was part of a 10-day media launch and dealer education program, which began with a press conference, continued with a 50-vehicle parade down Collins Avenue in South Beach before culminating in the runway drive.
The Aventador Roadster is the newest addition to Lamborghini’s range, sharing the 690bhp 6.5-litre V12 engine from the Aventador coupé. The removable top, made from light-weight carbon fibre, weighs a little under 12kg resulting in a car which weighs just 50kg more than the coupé at 1625kg.
Zero to 62mph performance drops from 2.9 to 3.0 seconds, with top speed remaining unchanged at 217mph.
A wind deflector which rests on the front windshield frame, delivers almost complete calm inside the car, even at high speed, and can be stored in the luggage compartment when not in use.
At around £285,000 in the UK, the Aventador Roadster will be priced at £40,000 more than the coupé with first deliveries expected this summer.
