As the Essen Motor Show gets underway Toyota Motorsports GmbH has lifted the wraps on its vision of a sports saloon, to challenge the very best from Brabus and AMG. The TS-650 is based on the new Lexus LS saloon, but that’s about where the similarities end.
Built on the foundations of the all-new Lexus LS 460, the 641bhp TS-650 features a bi-turbo 5.0-litre engine delivering 564lb-ft (765Nm) of torque from a properly sporting engine that revs to 7,450rpm. Power is delivered via an eight-speed high-torque-capacity transmission while the aerodynamics have been improved using TMG’s cutting-edge wind tunnels.
While the TS-650 is a showcase for TMG’s high-performance capabilities, the show car has been built with production in mind. A price has yet to be set, but TMG will be evaluating customer interest from feedback at the show.
It’s not just the most powerful of sports saloons, the company set out to push the limits of performance in all areas. the TS-650 is fitted with a Torsen rear differential, uprated multi-link suspension and Bremo carbon ceramic brakes.
A set of monstrous wheels and tyres are fitted 275/35R20 on 10J rims at the front and 345/30R20 on 12J rims at the rear. For track use, the company has developed 295/35R20 footwear to increase front-end grip.
Performance is naturally class-leading with a quoted 188mph (320 km/h) top speed and 0-62mph acceleration in 3.9 secs.
Despite the proliferation of carbon fibre used in the front and rear valances, front-wings, bonnet and side skirts, the TS-650 tips the scales at 2,050kg, so expect more of an auto-bahn-stormer than Nürburgring track-meister, although no doubt TMG will release a video soon to disprove even the most ardent pessimists.
